About Your Instructor, Kelly Hickey CVT

Kelly's lifelong commitment to animal welfare has fueled her veterinary career from a young age. When she was five, Kelley surprised her parents by saving $65 in spare change to buy a retired pony from a local farm. Her parents convinced her to spend the money on pony dolls instead, but the light of her dream to help animals was not dimmed.

Kelly went on to become a mainstay of the overnight skeleton crew in the emergency room at one of New Jersey's largest veterinary hospitals. She has also given her time and skills to smaller specialty clinics, most notably in the field of ophthalmology. For six years, Kelly devoted her time to the ASPCA, becoming one of the most-utilized responders. Working side by side with law enforcement, she gathered evidence and helped treat thousands of cases of animal abuse and neglect, including cases related to several illegal dog-fighting rings. Kelly was also part of the USDA's taskforce against the avian influenza outbreak in 2015 and received national recognition for her service.

Kelly has extensive experience teaching here in the USA, having presented as a case finalist at the Western Veterinary Conference in Las Vegas. She also has international experience, having traveled abroad to increase animal welfare in places such as the Bahamas, Hawaii, Rota, Aruba, and the Galapagos Islands. During these travels, she volunteered at free spay/neuter clinics and participated in humane education programs.

Today, Kelly is proud to be a CVT (Certified Veterinary Technician) with more than 16 years of experience, and an impressive 300+ CPR saves to her credit. Kelly has even reached the next level by being one of the first hundred people in the world to become certified as an instructor of RECOVER Initiative—the newest and most effective form of resuscitation available. She is currently employed in another of New Jersey's largest emergency hospitals and is pursuing specialty certifications in internal medicine and critical care.
